A Southern Conservative's Guide to
AUBURN

New In Town? Tired of Chili's?  Want to see Auburn's Past?  Here's a few humble suggestions.

Where To Eat and Drink

--Good Ol' Boys
(Sandhill Rd) Over 85 toward 'Skeegee, turn left at the first and only flashing caution light..2 miles on your left.  Good-home cooked catfish, steaks with real reasonable prices.  Patrons like their government small and their portions large. Home to many a League meeting.

---Whispering Oaks Bed and Breakfast
(Geneva Rd.)  Downtown Opelika favorite.  Not sure if anyone actually sleeps there, but the locals stream in to eat by far the best all-you-can-eat lunch buffet in town.  Miss your mama's home-cooking? You can get it all from fried chicken to collard greens to banana cream pie for under 6 bucks.  Pick your favorite room of this antebellum mansion to chow down in.

---The Strutting Duck
(Wire Rd)  Warning: Thoroughly infiltrated by League members! Auburn's country bar.  Willie, Waylon, Merle, and Coe all are welcome here.

Auburn Confederate Monuments (probably an incomplete and incorrect list..addition and corrections welcomed)

--Bullet-Riddled Battle Flag of ...Alabama Regiment
--Recently moved to Special Collection Room of the University Library on the Ground Floor

--Jefferson Davis Boulder
--One of Auburn's lesser known monuments.  On his way to his inauguration in Montgomery, Alabama, Jefferson Davis' circuitous route led him by train through Opelika and Auburn.  On the spot today marked by a boulder in front of the Auburn Depot (now offices), he reviewed Auburn's troops.

--Pine Hill Cemetary
--Head out Roosevelt Dr. away from campus.  Cemetary contains old Auburn families, CSA veterans and a monument to Texas veterans who died in Auburn hospitals during the War of Northern Aggression.

--Comemoration Plaque
--Auburn's Langdon Hall holds a nice plaque honoring those who fought the Yankees.

---The Lathe
--Next to Samford Hall stands a lathe used to make cannons during the war.  Read the interesting story on the plaque.
